Understanding Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a lifelong learning difference that primarily affects how a person processes written and spoken language. It is not a reflection of intelligence. Many individuals with dyslexia are highly capable, creative, and resilient, yet they may experience difficulties with reading, writing, spelling, or working memory.
With the right strategies and tools, people with dyslexia can thrive in education, work, and life. Support often focuses on unlocking strengths while finding practical ways to manage challenges.
Understanding Dyscalculia
Dyscalculia is another learning difference, sometimes described as “math dyslexia.” It affects how individuals understand numbers, patterns, and mathematical concepts. Like dyslexia, it is unrelated to intelligence, but it can create real difficulties in school, work, and everyday life (such as managing money or telling time).
Common Signs of Dyslexia
Some signs may include:
✔ Difficulty linking letters with sounds or blending sounds into words.
✔ Struggles with spelling or confusing similar-looking/sounding words.
✔ Slow or effortful reading, often needing to re-read for understanding.
✔ Trouble remembering sequences (e.g., alphabet, months, days).
✔ Challenges with organisation, time management, or following instructions.
Common Signs of Dyscalculia
Some indicators may include:
✔ Struggling to learn to count or recognise number patterns.
✔ Difficulty with arithmetic or times tables.
✔ Forgetting number sequences or confusing similar-looking numbers.
✔ Problems estimating time, distance, or quantity.
✔ Avoidance of number-based tasks due to anxiety or frustration.
"These challenges may vary in severity. If several of these signs persist over time, an assessment can help bring clarity and support."
